Who the Hell is REALLY #1 in College Football?

USC… Florida… Oklahoma? Trojans… Gators… Sooners? Sanchez… Tebow… Bradford? Carroll… Meyer… Stoops?

Until Division 1 NCAA Football adopts a true playoff system, we can all only speculate the answer to my query. Florida and Oklahoma will meet on January 8 to supposedly crown a new national champion, but I say, “Hold on, not so damned fast.”

If not for one “off day” almost four months ago, there would be no question – whatsoever – that the University of Southern California would be number one in the nation by a wide margin. But that abominable September loss to Oregon State had the Trojans placed fifth going into the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day. And on the first day of the year, they completely dismantled Penn State as quarterback Mark Sanchez threw for four touchdowns and over four hundred yards in the air. Joe Paterno himself now believes that USC is in a class of their own.

In my opinion, the Trojans are the very best and would beat the other two teams in a head to head, but who the hell am I? I can only spout off like the fat jackass I am because we will most likely never know the answer. Now if you’re a fan of either of the other two teams – or the SEC in general – then you wholeheartedly disagree with me. You’ll tell me that the teams in the South are much tougher than the teams in the PAC Ten, and I would tend to agree with that – but the one team at the top is so powerful on both sides of the ball that it is scary.

Florida’s Tim Tebow is amazing and won the Heisman Trophy in 2007. Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford is amazing and won the Heisman Trophy in 2008. USC’s Mark Sanchez is this year’s Rose Bowl MVP and if he doesn’t turn pro this coming fall, he is the frontrunner for the Heavy Bronze trophy in 2009.

The 2008 Season numbers…

USC went 12 and 1. Noted victories…
A huge 35-3 win over Ohio State in week two. They beat Virginia 52-7, Oregon 44-10, Arizona State 28-0, Washington 56-0, Notre dame 38-3, and Washington State 69-0, and a Rose Bowl triumph over Penn State 38-24. Only loss to Oregon State 27-21.

Florida is currently 12-1. Noted victories…
Georgia 49-10, Hawaii 56-10, Miami 26-3, LSU 51-21, Kentucky 63-5, South Carolina 56-6, Florida State 45-15, Citadel 70-19, and Alabama 31-10. Only Loss to Mississippi 31-30.

Oklahoma is currently 12-1. Noted Victories…
Texas Tech 65-21, Missouri 62-21, Kansas 45-21, Texas A&M 66-28, Nebraska 62-28, Oklahoma State 61-41, and Baylor 49-17. Only Loss to 2009 Heisman winner, Colt McCoy and Texas 45-35.

So who will be number one? See me on January 9th and we’ll talk then.

Oh, BTW… The hefty mamma busting out of the bikini is Tim Tebow’s girlfriend. For real. God-dayum, I gotta get me one of those Heismans.

PS: Something tells me the good folks in Utah will have something to say about all of this after the Utes stomped Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

I like Florida just for Tebow’s girl. Jeez … how are those strings able to handle the load?

Alabama blew it tonight. Maybe Utah really is that good.

  2. tommyzman Says:

I have NEVER seen a team as explosive as Utah at the start of that game. They stomped Alabama a new ass.

  3. Overworked Says:

For starters, Tebow’s girl is wearing a permanently installed life preserver. Well, at least two floaters or something.

CajunBoy, You would probably maintain that USC faced weak competition in the Pac-10. But the Pac-10 is now 5 – 0 in this year’s bowl games. They may not be the best, but they certainly aren’t a pushover.

  5. CajunBoy Says:

Still not a USC fan … I refuse to jump on the bandwagon … I guess Penn was just too worn out and hurt from playing some tough teams this season … they couldn’t hang with USC. I lost track after five as to the number of SEC teams in bowl games this year … ;-) )

Utah was pissed and came out looking for blood. I still think you’ll see Alabama competing for the national title next year. They didn’t do half bad considering where they were last year … muchless the year before.

  6. Overworked Says:

Hmmm. It’s not how many bowls you get into… it’s how many you win. In fact, reputation (true or false) gets you into them. It’s how good you really are… that wins them.

We’ll see. It’s funny how Utah was just lucky and Penn State was just tired.

Oregon State won their bowl game, even without their two best players. Yet everyone says that USC’s loss to Oregon State was a loss to a worthless Pac-10 team.

Maybe not. Maybe an in-conference loss is just as hard a fight as a non-conference game.

What is the SEC bowl record this year?

I will admit this about the Alabama / Utah game. In college football, it’s about heart and emotion as much as about talent. On any given day, you do not know how it will come out between two teams if they are even somewhat closely matched.

… and that’s what I love about college football.

Ah Cajun Boy is blowing h piping hot creole out of his butt. Utah laid some whop-ass on Alabama! Those first three drives were amazing.

  8. Overworked Says:

Today Texas struggled to defeat Ohio State. When they finally did… by 3 points… Mack Brown promptly claimed the right to the National Championship.

USC beat OSU by 32 points, nearly shutting them out: 35 – 3. They had their third string in for the entire fourth quarter.

Texas and USC are both 12-1, and USC demolished the only team that they both played, while Texas struggled until the last 38 seconds. Mack Brown is an idiot, pure and simple.

USC may not be the best, but it is clearly better than Texas, this year.

  9. tommyzman Says:

OW, as I said, I believe USC is the best team… but, by going 13-0 and dismantling Alabama, Utah sure as hell has a case for being named number one over everyone.

    Tommy, et al,

I’ve got to agree with you. It was a dandy of a season, wasn’t it?
